These everyday interactions expose us to germs, including bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that can lead to infections such as the common cold, influenza, and gastrointestinal illnesses.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), proper hand hygiene can reduce the transmission of many infectious diseases by up to 50%. This simple habit doesn’t just protect the individual—it helps safeguard entire communities, especially in crowded environments like schools, workplaces, and healthcare facilities.

The Right Way to Wash Your Hands

Effective hand washing is more than just a quick rinse under running water. It involves a few critical steps:

  • Wet your hands with clean, running water.
  • Lather with soap, covering all surfaces—backs of hands, between fingers, and under nails.
  • Scrub for at least 20 seconds. (Try humming the “Happy Birthday” song twice.)
  • Rinse thoroughly under running water.
  • Dry with a clean towel.

If soap and water are not available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can be used, although it’s not as effective against certain types of germs and doesn’t remove dirt or chemicals.

In healthcare settings, it can prevent the spread of serious hospital-acquired infections.
